𝐀 “𝐓𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐑𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭”

Last year I had the opportunity to celebrate the 50th birthday of a local “wine rebel” Sommelier with his family and friends leading a Bourbon Eventure Adult Ice Cream Social whiskey pairing event.

𝙄 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙙𝙙 𝙖 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙩𝙤𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙮 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨, therefore, the first bourbon sampled by guests was the 𝙈𝙘𝙁𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚 12 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧, boasting a "toast to the rebellious spirit". This straight bourbon aged over 12 years is finished for up to an additional year in 𝒄𝒂𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒕 𝒔𝒂𝒖𝒗𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒐𝒏 𝒃𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒔 from the central coast of California. I selected this particular bourbon to honor his love of wine, as well as to introduce the other wine loving guests to the world of whiskey. 𝑾𝒆 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒂 𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎 for the sweet notes of vanilla, dried fruit and sherry in the profile.

𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐮𝐩, 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐜𝐡. While she prefers a peated scotch, many do not because they may start off tasting the wrong one, being too strong, smoky and peaty. What is peat? The smokey flavor of the peat fires used to dry malted barley. The longer and hotter the stronger the flavor! Your peated scotch, to name a few, would be Laphroaig and Ardbeg. I selected a 𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙂𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙙𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙝 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙚 & 𝘾𝙖𝙣𝙚, considered a “marriage of peated and non-peated whiskies” finished in Latin rum casks. 𝑾𝒆 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒕 𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎 to balance the smokey and sweet.

𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐲, 𝐰𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐮𝐩 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐲𝐞 for it’s balance of sweet and spice. With notes of chocolate, hazelnut, molasses and black pepper, it was perfectly 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎. One guest shared with me how much she loved this pairing as it reminded her of her “favorite chocolates on her honeymoon in Paris”!

After the tasting, guests were able to enjoy an additional pour of their favorite spirit for a special birthday toast, as well as an opportunity to make an ice cream sundae, drizzled with their choice of my homemade peanut butter or salted caramel bourbon cream!

You don’t need a special occasion to have ice cream, but it is perfect if you are looking to celebrate whether for a public or private event. Don’t want to do ice cream, no problem! I can pair with any dessert ~ pies, cakes, chocolates, and any other desserts we can have fun with!
